Plantronics today upped the ante in the Bluetooth performance competition by introducing a new wireless cell phone headset that claims improved audio quality and advanced technology for keeping the headset charged.

Plantronics, of Santa Cruz, Calif., introduced the Discovery 975 for the premium consumer buyer, a replacement for the Discovery 925 that includes the Audio IQ 2.0 noise cancelling sol republic tracks hd technology introduced in the professional grade Voyager Pro introduced in April.

The 975, priced at $130, improves upon the performance of the 925 by moving the dual mics for noise cancellation from the tip of the mic boom to the earpiece, Lori Langona, a Plantronics global product manager, explained. With dual mic technology, one mic picks up the user voice, while the other picks up ambient noise such as traffic, crowds and wind. The Audio IQ 2 technology, already available in the Voyager Pro, coupled with technology, including Gore-Tex wind dampening material in the mic boom, muffles ambient noise so the caller voice is clear. Additional electronic filters improve the quality of the incoming caller voice.

have headsets literally coming out of my ears, said Langona, referring to the company extensive product testing, including focus groups and a of ears of every shape and size, to make sure its headsets fit snugly and comfortably. designing the 975, Plantronics also sought to improve the charging case (see photo below), Langona added. A fully charged 975 offers five hours of talk time. The charging case is designed to recharge the headset twice before it has to be plugged into an outlet to be recharged, thus offering 15 hours of talk time before the user needs to search for an outlet. An LCD screen in the case displays the charging levels of the case and the headset.

The 975 offers a slightly more streamlined design than the 925, replacing a V-shaped mic boom, that tapers from the earpiece down to the mic, with a slender one piece boom.

The Discovery 975 combines the style of a fashion accessory with the professional grade performance of the Voyager Pro, said Rob Enderle, president and principal analyst of the San Jose-based Enderle Group. The $130 price tag puts the 975 firmly in the premium handset category. He prefers the Pro because it comes with a behind-the-ear loop for someone like him who has their earpiece on all day.

[Discovery 975] is much more for someone who a bit more fashion conscious and because they more fashion conscious, that price point actually feeds the exclusivity without making the thing too expensive for them to afford, said Enderle.

Enderle compares the Plantronics line to other premium-priced headsets from Blue Ant and Aliph, maker of the Jawbone.

has] got some advantages over the other products sol republic headphones on the market at the moment, mostly having to do with sound quality, which I think positions them reasonably well in the segment, he said.
